Barry McCarthy has climbed into the world’s top 100 ODI bowlers after an impressive showing in Ireland’s series win over Afghanistan last week.
Their five-wicket win in Sharjah on Sunday sealed a turnaround victory in the three-match series after a heavy defeat in the first match.
McCarthy, recalled for the final two fixtures, took his maiden ODI five-wicket haul to draw level before adding three more to help complete a stunning fightback.
Eight wickets over two matches stretched McCarthy’s ODI record to 33 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 23.18.
His five-wicket haul was a record-breaking one, too – Ireland’s first against a full international side & their first since being granted Test status in the summer. Their inaugural Test will be played against Pakistan in the New Year.
Durham team mate Stuart Poynter scored 27*, 18 & 1* in the series.
