Durham sail to convincing win over University

Seren Waters was the first man out, trapped lbw by Graham Onions.  He was followed swiftly back to the pavilion by Chris Jones who was caught at gully by Dale Benkenstein for a second time in the match, but this time off the bowling of Callum Thorp, leaving the University 3-2 in the fourth over.

The visitors lost a third early wicket when Ajay Sangha became Onions’ second victim after he was caught by Ben Stokes for just 1.

Stokes, came on to bowl the tenth over, the change proving successful after he  struck with his seventh delivery as Luke Patel was caught behind for just three.  The Cumbrian claimed a second wicket in the same over when Scott Borthwick caught Smith (0) with the University 15-5 after 12 overs.

A change of ends for Callum Thorp saw him claim the sixth wicket as the visitors slumped to 16-6 in the 13th over after Watkins was caught in the slips by Borthwick without scoring.

Rishab Shah (7) went the next over, trapped lbw by Stokes.  With Luke Blackaby absent hurt once Thorp and Stokes picked up their respective third and fourth wickets the University were dismissed for just 18 in their second innings.

At the close of play Head Coach Geoff Cook said, “Obviously it would have been nice for the change bowlers, Mitchell Claydon and Ruel Brathwaite, to get a few more overs under their belt but if you look at it in basic terms of people setting the right standards then Onions and Thorp have been outstanding in the game.

“I thought we good and conditions were excellent for bowling, it was difficult for inexperienced batsmen, for sure.”
