Durham had established a lead of 105 before the rain brought about an early close on the third day at New Road
After a fairly quiet start Durham sprang into action in the final hour of the morning session with Worcestershire seven down by lunch.
Scott Borthwick was the pick of the attack, firstly trapping Australian overseas Phil Hughes lbw on 81 and then combining twice with Michael Richardson within two overs to dismiss Moeen Ali (18) and Matthew Pardoe (2) leaving Worcestershire 169-5.
Borthwick claimed his fourth scalp after the lunch break catching James Cameron (24) off his own bowling. Worcester were 178-7 after Ben Scott was dismissed the following over when he was caught behind off Callum Thorp without scoring.
It was Chris Rushworth who cleared up the tail with Gareth Andrew (6) caught by Callum Thorp and Jack Shantry (17) and Richard Jones (4) both caught behind as Worcester were dismissed for 205.
Durham openers Will Smith and Mark Stoneman took to the middle to extend the side’s 38 run first innings lead. The pair batted until rain brought play to an early halt with Durham 67-0, leading by 105.
At the close of play Scott Borthwick spoke to www.durhamccc.co.uk , “It was nice to get some overs under by belt and take some wickets, it was a nice pitch to bowl on. We struck at our task and I think we bowled really well before lunch. It was our aim to bowl straight and give them nothing and we did that, I thought me and Thorpy were a good partnership, he was bowling really tight.
“We bowled well and forced errors from Worcester, bowling a lot of dot balls and maidens and that’s how you get wickets. It’s a shame the rain has come because our openers were doing really well, ideally if it wasn’t raining it would’ve been great to bat on.”
