The club has lost a great friend and servant in former board member Ken Gardner, who has died aged 71.
Never short of an opinion or a humorous anecdote, Ken was always a jovial and lively companion and will be particularly sadly missed at Hartlepool Cricket Club, where he was involved for more than 50 years as captain, secretary, chairman and president.
He was also involved with Durham for half his life, being a member of the committee in Minor Counties days before serving on the board of the first-class club.
Ken took great delight in Hartlepool staging Durham matches in their early years as a first-class county.
He was president of the North Yorkshire and South Durham League for eight years and became only the third person to be inducted into the league’s hall of fame.
In 1993, while a personnel officer at SCA Packaging, he was awarded the MBE for his services to industrial relations.
Ken’s funeral will be held on Wednesday (August 8) at 11am at St Paul’s Church, Grange Road, Hartlepool, and afterwards at the crematorium and cricket club.
All at Durham CCC would like to extend their deepest sympathies to Ken’s family and friends.
