Durham beat Notts by 16 runs at Trent Bridge to take their winning streak to three in the LV= County Championship
Durham returned to the crease on the fourth morning after deciding not to declare overnight – they extended their lead to 366 in the first four overs of the day before declaring on 325-8.
Paul Collingwood was the man out, he hit a huge maximum but was bowled a delivery later by Graeme White for 59.
The declaration gave Notts 90 overs to attempt to score 366 runs in order to secure victory.
Riki Wessels had to change bats five deliveries into the Notts second innings after a Graham Onions delivery took a chunk out of the bottom of his original bat. The change didn’t seem to trouble him, he went on score his fifty without giving the visitors many chances to dismiss him.
Despite the best efforts of the Durham attack, the Notts opening pair put on 168 before Chris Rushworth finally made the breakthrough, with Wessels caught by Thorp two short of his century.
A change in the attack for the 48th over saw Michael Lumb looking twitchy facing Scott Borthwick in his second spell and the off spinner saw him off with his sixth delivery when he was caught by Mark Wood at short fine leg.
Notts were 212-3, trailing by 154, when Graham Onions, in the second over of his third spell, picked up his first wicket of the innings with overseas star Adam Voges (16) caught behind for just 2.
Mark Wood got in on the action in his second over after the tea break, trapping centurion Alex Hales lbw with Notts 248-4, requiring 118 from 32.1 overs.
The wicket of Chris Read was added to Wood’s haul when he was clean bowled for just 8. A partnership of 30 between Paul Franks and Stephen Mullaney saw Notts maintain momentum giving Notts a decent chance to secure a win, if they could have maintained it.
But, Borthwick struck a second time when Franks was caught by Thorp for 13.
When White (8) was caught at mid wicket by Mark Stoneman off Borthwick Notts chances of securing the win effectively came to an end.
A flurry from Ben Phillips, who hit three consecutive boundaries gave Notts a chance but his subsequent dismissal, caught by Borthwick at mid wicket off Wood for 22, further dented their confidence.
In a tense final few overs Durham won by 16 runs after Wood dismissed Fletcher and Carter within four balls, picking up his fourth and fifth scalps respectively.
At the close of play Durhamccc.co.uk spoke to Paul Collingwood, “It was another unbelievable game. The last four or five games have gone to the wire and today was no different. They have been different conditions that we’re used to playing in, it wasn’t swinging or seaming around too much and it was a great effort from the boys to take all 10 wickets today on such a flat pitch.
“Full credit goes to the boys. For Graham Onions to do what he did was a special effort, for Rocky to get his hundred and put a total on the board that we could defend was important and Mark Wood today was absolutely fantastic. He has come in, got the ball reverse swinging and he changed the game. Scotty Borthwick at the opposite end, bowling into the rough was causing problems too. We knew Notts were going to go for the win and I thought they batted superbly well but we just came out on top.
“We’ve still got a lot of work to do. We’ve had a couple of results now and we’ve got to keep doing the right things on the park, that’s the important thing. We’ve got to keep scoring hundreds, for someone to hold their hand up and take the wickets and do the simple things well.”
