Durham dismissed Sussex for 211 before tea on the first day with Ben Brown unbeaten on 76. Callum Thorp picked up three wickets with Chris Rushworth and Ben Stokes claiming two wickets apiece. Scott Borthwick picked up one scalp with two run outs, one from Keaton Jennings who dismissed Wernars on 50, clearing up the innings.
Durham lost two early wickets in response and were 31-2 in the third over with Lewis Hatchett trapping Keaton Jennings (8) lbw and Steve Magoffin claiming his first wicket when Michael Richardson was also trapped leg-before.
Magoffin struck twice again before the close of play, bowling Ben Stokes (22) and Dale Benkenstein (6) reducing Durham to 65-4.
Fifty from Mark Stoneman, who had Richardson on as his runner for the latter part of the session, gave the total a much needed boost to 118 before the fifth wicket fell, that of Paul Collingwood, who was caught by Magoffin off Monty Panesar for 19.
Stoneman was dismissed with six overs of the day remaining, caught off Panesar for 52 leaving Durham 119-6.
