Onions puts Durham ahead on Day Two

Durham put themselves in command of their LV= County Championship clash with Yorkshire after they bowled the visitors out claiming seven wickets in the final session of a rain-affected day at Emirates Durham ICG.

Heavy rain in the morning prevented any play until 4.10pm. However, Graham Onions rewarded by getting his first five-wicket haul of the season, while Ben Stokes added three wickets of his own while Chris Rushworth added a further wicket to bowl the visitors out for 177.

After a long delay, Yorkshire batsmen Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow added 29 runs to the overnight total of 57-3 before Root had his middle stump removed by Onions for one short of his half-century.

Bairstow soon followed, his England teammate back to the pavilion as hooked an Onions delivery straight to Mark Stoneman at deep square leg for 16 leaving his side 97-5.

Adil Rashid and Gary Ballance looked to steady the innings which they did for four overs before Ballance fell to Onions as he was caught behind by Mustard for five.

Rashid started to play shots when he was joined in the middle by Tim Bresnan and he made his way to 25, scoring four boundaries before he became the first of Stokes’ victims when he was lbw.

One over later, Bresnan lost his wicket when he drove hard at a ball from Rushworth and edged the ball straight into the safe hands of Paul Collingwood, with the visitors 136-8.

Former Durham man Liam Plunkett showed resistance as he moved his side past the 150 mark. Ryan Sidebottom added seven before he lofted the ball to Jennings at fine leg off the bowling of Stokes.

The all-rounder wrapped up the Yorkshire innings on 177 when he bowled Steve Patterson for 7, 60 runs behind Durham’s first innings total.
