Durham Dominate Day 2

Durham have dominated Day Two of their LVCC match against Derbyshire with both the bat and ball.

Hot and sunny conditions greeted players at Emirates Durham ICG and Chris Rushworth stole the show as he took 6-64 to tear through the Derbyshire line-up in the first two sessions of day two.

Derbyshire resumed at 15-1 after they bowled Durham out for 253 on Day 1 with Rushworth taking the late wicket for Durham after the visitors faced 8 overs late yesterday.

Rushworth continued on from where he left off the night before when he struck on just the fourth ball of the day, clean bowling Johnson for 6 to start the day well.

The next over Callum Thorp dealt Derbyshire a double blow when he removed their skipper Wayne Madsen who was caught behind for 13 leaving them 21-3.

Seven overs later Rushworth took his 3rd wicket with Durston also edging behind to Durham keeper Phil Mustard for 16 and shortly after Thorp got his second when Redfern edged to Breese in the slips for 2 leaving Derbyshire in trouble at 47-5.

The news didn’t get any better for the visitors when Mark Wood came into the attack and had immediate affect claiming the wicket of Poynto for 1, giving Mustard his third catch of the day.

After spells from Stokes and Wood, Rushworth was brought back into the attack 15 minutes before lunch and the move proved effective.

In his third ball of his second spell he got the big wicket of Chanderpaul who was another Derbyshire batsman to edge to Mustard.  Two balls later he dismissed Clare with Will Smith taking a nice catch to leave Derbyshire 81-8 and give Rushworth his 5th.

Just after lunch Wood claimed his second when Groenewald chipped to Stokes and the Derbyshire innings came to a close when Rushworth claimed his 6th wicket, bowling Footitt for 16.

It was a superb bowling performance led by Rushworth who claimed figures of 6-64 as Derbyshire finished on 113, 140 runs shy of Durham’s first innings.

Durham got off to a good start with Stoneman and Jennings enjoying the warm conditions until a big appeal for the wicket of Stoneman was successful and he departed for 10, judged lbw despite it appearing too high.

Despite the early wicket Durham powered on through young guns Keaton Jennings and Scott Borthwick who put on a prolific batting display to continue to increase the Durham lead.

The pair got Durham past a lead of 200 with Scott Borthwick bringing up his 50 just after this milestone.  His 50 came off just 48 balls and included 9 boundaries.

The pair continued to put runs on the board, finding the boundaries with ease to take the lead past 260 and put on a 100 run stand just before the tea break.

The duo continued to put runs on the board and extend the Durham lead in the final session and Scott Borthwick made his second century of the season when he hit a six to bring up his 100 off 117 balls including 16 fours and the one six.

It wasn’t long after when Jennings hit a boundary to make his 50 and take their partnership past 150 and extend the Durham lead to 314.

The lead was extended to 330 before Derbyshire finally got their breakthrough when Redfern trapped Borhtwick lbw for 117 from 155 with his innings including 17 boundaries and his and Jennings 168 run partnership ending.

New batsman Will Smith 13* and Jennings 65* saw out the final few overs in the day which saw the Durham lead go out to 348 after finishing on 208-2.
