Durham take charge on Day two

After a solid day in the middle on Day 1, Durham resumed 309-5 with skipper Paul Collingwood and night-watchman Jamie Harrison at the crease.

Harrison contributed 10 before he became Chris Tremlett’s 6th victim in the 8th over of the day as Harrison edged to third slip to find the hands of De Bruyn.

Collingwood was looking solid at the crease with some fine shot making taking him to 36 before Dernbach bowled him just before midday ticked over leaving Durham 7 wickets down for 348.

Collingwood’s wicket brought debutant Usman Arshad to the crease to join Phil Mustard with the pair looking to get Durham close to 400.

Mustard and Arshad put on 54 before Arshad was Tremlett’s 7th wicket with Arshad departing for 15.  Tremlett then picked up his 8th wicket four overs later when Wood found Wilson on 3.

Last man in, Chris Rushworth then also picked out Wilson off the bowling off Linley in the 131st over as Durham finished all out for their highest score against Surrey and their highest score at home this season, 421.

Durham got off to an equally impressive start with the ball with Jamie Harrison welcomed back into First Class cricket with a wicket in the 4th over as Burns edged to Mustard behind the stumps.

Rushworth then struck the following over with Harinath finding Richardson after making just the one run.  Three overs later Harrison claimed his second wicket trapping Solanki lbw for 9 leaving the visitors 20-3.

Mark Wood then came into the attack and had immediate impact, striking on his first ball to dismiss the dangerous Amla for 14.

With three overs left before tea Usman Arshad came into the attack for the first time in what promises to be a prosperous First Class career.

The 20-year old claimed his 1st First Class wicket when he bowled de Bruyn for 21 and followed it up with another wicket four balls later as Wilson edged to Mustard leaving Surrey 83-6.

Bad light delayed play after tea  with the score 97-6 and the light situation didn’t get any better before the 6pm deadline with the afternoon session lost.

With two days to play and a bit of rain forecast for Day three Durham will be looking for quick wickets early on tomorrow.
