Maiden Century for Richardson Highlights Day Two

Durham have had a solid day at Scarborough breaking records as they recorded a total of 573 with three centurions including a maiden first class hundred for Michael Richardson.

Durham resumed day two on 406-6 but it was Yorkshire who drew first blood when Sidebottom claimed the big wicket of Paul Collingwood in just the third over with the Durham skipper trapped lbw for 81.

Michael Richardson and Mark Wood then combined to get Durham past 450 and put on a 49 run stand before Wood hit straight to Brooks giving former Durham player Liam Plunkett his first wicket of the innings.

Richardson then found another partner in number 10 Jamie Harrison who showed some nice form and he and Richardson got the Durham total past 500 half an hour before lunch.

Richardson became the fourth Durham player to make 50, raising his bat after his half century came off 81 balls and at lunch the pair had put on 62 together to have Durham 524-8, a top score for the season.

Just after lunch Harrison was run out for a career best 35 and it was the end of a superb 84-run stand as the number 10 made a career best 35.

With Chris Rushworth the last man in to join Richardson who was in the nervous nineties, the number 11 kept his cool and stayed at the crease as Richardson went on to score a superb maiden first class century.

Richardson brought up his century in style smashing a six into the crowd as he raised his arms in excitement as he became the third centurion for Durham this innings.

Richardson soon became the final wicket to fall as he found Ballance to give Williamson the wicket with Richardson making 102 from 144 with 10 fours and 2 sixes.

It was a superb batting performance from Durham with three centuries (Stokes 127, Stoneman 123 and Richardson 102) alongside good knocks from Collingwood (84) and Mustard (42).

The Yorkshire reply started with an early wicket as Ben Stokes took a screamer at 4th slip to give Rushworth the first wicket and send Lyth back to the pavilion.

Jaques and Williamson then steadied for the home-side and put on 54 before the change to spin worked for Durham and Scott Borthwick broke the partnership with Smith taking a catch at short fine leg to dismiss Jaques and have Yorkshire 72-2 just before the tea break.

Just after tea Jamie Harrison struck for his first wicket of the match, trapping Gale lbw for 12 as the score board read 107-3.

From then on it was Yorkshire’s afternoon as Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow put together a steady 75-run partnership to deny the Durham attack for the remainder of the afternoon to finish on 182-3.
