Onions returns to squad for Vikings showdown

Graham Onions could be in line for a first limited-overs appearance of the season in tomorrow’s Royal London One-Day Cup match against the Yorkshire Vikings at Emirates Riverside (11am start).

He is named as part of a 13-man squad for the crucial North Group fixture, which is also to be televised live on Sky Sports.

Onions, who has featured prominently in all nine Specsavers County Championship fixtures to date, also played for the Second XI in their win over Leicestershire in the week.

Also in the squad is Gordon Muchall, who could potentially play his final One-Day fixture on home turf – but he will be hoping not.

The 33-year-old is retiring to become a full-time teacher at the end of this campaign but Durham could yet secure a home quarter-final.

It would take wins over the Vikings tomorrow and at Emirates Old Trafford against the Lancashire Lightning on Monday, but it is still mathematically possible for a quarter-final to be held in the North East.

Two points are not all that is at stake tomorrow as the sides compete for the DLI Trophy, while the Gilberts Cup competition also takes place during the interval.

Squad vs Yorkshire Vikings (31 July): Paul Collingwood (c), Mark Stoneman, Keaton Jennings, Scott Borthwick, Jack Burnham, Gordon Muchall, Michael Richardson, Ryan Pringle, Stuart Poynter, Paul Coughlin, Usman Arshad, Chris Rushworth, Graham Onions
