Damp squib ends RL50 campaign in Manchester

Match abandoned: Lancashire Lightning (39/0) vs Durham

Durham’s chances of Royal London One-Day Cup qualification are finished after a washed out match against the Lancashire Lightning at Emirates Old Trafford.

There was a brief spell of play for seven overs as the hosts advanced to 39/0, with Karl Brown making a quickfire 30.

But the rain returned and no more play was possible, leaving Jon Lewis’ side frustrated as other results went against them.

With a result possible at Trent Bridge between Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire, alongside Yorkshire failing to beat Warwickshire, fate transpired against Durham to dump them out of the competition.

No rain had been forecasted until the late evening in Manchester but once it started around midday, it barely relented.

There was enough time to start a scheduled 24 overs per side match at 6:15pm in which the Lightning batted seven overs.

And even after they left, another start was scheduled at 7:45pm in a game reduced to 17 overs.

But the elements returned and with the minimum number of overs to constitute a match already bowled at Trent Bridge, Durham needed the table-topping Vikings to overturn Warwickshire.

Jonathan Trott’s century anchored the visitors to 283/6 and after losing quick wickets in the top order, Yorkshire fell well short on 167.

With that result went Durham’s chances of reaching the knockout stages of a second limited-overs competition.

The side now turn their attentions to Thursday’s Specsavers County Championship match at Somerset, followed by the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final at Gloucestershire a week on Wednesday.
