Carse & Weighell commit future to Durham

Brydon Carse and James Weighell have become the latest players to commit their futures to Durham after signing new contracts.

The pair have signed respective two-year deals, taking them through until the end of the 2018 season at Emirates Riverside.

And they will get chance to expand on promising showings in 2016 as part of Jon Lewis’ first XI squad.

Carse, 21, impressed at either end of the season after being propelled into the first team plans and was subsequently handed a development contract earlier in the season.

He debuted against Durham MCCU in the annual friendly at Emirates Riverside before picking up his first Specsavers County Championship wickets against Somerset.

And the fast bowler finished with 17 wickets to his name across eight matches, bouncing back from a mid-season injury suffered at Trent Bridge to feature in the final two games.

He also displayed his all-round skills, scoring a career-best 47 in the game at Nottinghamshire before hitting an important 45 in the final game at Hampshire, and picked up the Young Player of the Year award alongside Jack Burnham.

Weighell made his first-class debut in 2015 but announced himself in 2016 with three consecutive sets of career-best figures.

The 22-year-old followed 3/45 in the second innings against Lancashire with nine match wickets against Warwickshire, including a maiden five-for in the second innings to set up a dramatic victory at Edgbaston.

He then returned after an injury, also picked up at Trent Bridge, to captain the Second XI to a Championship title.
