Hickey signs new development deal

Adam Hickey has become the latest player to commit his future to Durham CCC for the 2017 season.

The promising 19-year-old has penned terms on a new one-year development contract at Emirates Riverside.

The all-rounder made his first-class debut in 2016 and also played a big part in the 2nd XI’s Championship-winning campaign.

He also featured in the England under-19 side in 2015 and was delighted to commit to another year at his home county.

“I’m obviously delighted, I didn’t ever want to go anywhere else,” Hickey told Durham TV.

“This is all I’ve ever known, these surroundings, and I’m pleased that the club has shown faith in me for another year.

“Hopefully I can go on and reward the faith in me, work hard in the winter and hopefully have a good year next year.”

Durham head coach Jon Lewis said: “He got a bit of a taste of it last year and when he was in the side, he was making good contributions.

“He has showed he has the appetite for big games, which is important, and he’s got the skill.

“The spin area of the squad is very important and Adam can be a real part of that.”

Hickey made his first-class debut against Sri Lanka ‘A’ but his competitive debut came in the thrilling win against Lancashire at Southport.

He contributed with his maiden first-class wickets in the second innings before holding his nerve to score 21 not out and see Durham to victory in a tense, nail-biting finish.

And he took a further four wickets in the games against Middlesex & Somerset before helping the second team, which he captained at 2nd XI Finals Day, to the Championship title.
