Onions breaks one record; eyes up another

Graham Onions has chalked up another milestone in a distinguished first-class career – and he already has another one firmly in his sights.

The wicket of Hardus Viljoen was the 34-year-old’s 600th in a first-class cricketing career that has so far spanned 14 seasons.

Appearances for England, England Lions, the MCC & South African side Dolphins mean they haven’t all come for Durham, but the veteran is fast closing in on the county’s record.

Simon Brown is the long-time holder of that record with 518 first-class wickets in a career which ended against Middlesex in 2002.

After Derbyshire’s first innings total of 164 on Day Two of the Specsavers County Championship match at Emirates Riverside, Onions had made it to 508.

The right-armer could complete the feat before the season is out & would love to do it on home turf.

Durham’s next two Specsavers County Championship matches are at home to Kent & Sussex, leaving Onions with a chance to break Brown’s record on the ground he has taken 277 first-class wickets at the time of writing.
