Stuart Poynter scored a sensational 159 not out as the Seconds’ season finished with a draw against Yorkshire in a three-day friendly at Scarborough.

Poynter’s 148-ball knock, which included 22x4s & a six, ensured Durham could declare before the close of Day One on 364/7.

Yorkshire made 310/5d in reply & Durham finished the second day 149 runs ahead with six wickets in hand.

However, overnight rain made the ground unplayable & the abandonment was called before the scheduled start of play.

Durham skipper Gareth Harte elected to bat first & though his side made a reasonable start, no one could establish a sizeable top order partnership.

Poynter & Josh Coughlin came together on 128/5, going on to record a 148-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

The Irish wicketkeeper dominated much of the scoring but Coughlin continued his excellent form with the bat this season in making 61.

The former then added a further 51 with Eitan Litvin before the declaration was called.

Coughlin removed Yorkshire opener Harry Brook but Tom Kohler Cadmore’s sprightly knock but the hosts back on top the following morning.

He added 88 & Matthew Waite made 64, the latter combining for an 80-run stand with Benjamin Birkhead.

They declared in an attempt to force proceedings along & it proved a fruitful decision as they took four wickets before the close, with Liam Trevaskis standing firm on 40 not out.
