Smith scores century ahead of Leics showdown

Result: Scotland ‘A’ (528 & 31/1) beat Durham 2nd XI (183 & 376; Smith 136, Poynter 61; Tahir 6/104) by 9 wickets

Will Smith scored a first century of the season as Durham’s senior players enjoyed time at the crease ahead of tomorrow’s Specsavers County Championship match against Leicestershire.

Unbeaten on 51 overnight, Smith made an eventual 136 in the Seconds’ nine-wicket loss to Scotland ‘A’ at Emirates Riverside.

Stuart Poynter put on 113 with Smith for the third wicket as they quickly sought to diminish the huge first innings deficit.

Smith’s composed innings came off 231 balls & contained 18 fours as he staked his claim to remain part of the Jon Lewis’s top order.

The opener was bowled in the afternoon session as Scotland pushed towards victory, with left-arm spinner Hamza Tahir taking six wickets inside his 35 overs.

A partnership of 72 between  Liam Trevaskis & James Weighell edged Durham into a lead, but Tahir completed the innings off to leave Scotland a small target, which they reached with ease.

Neil Killeen’s side face Yorkshire in their first Second XI Trophy & Championship matches next week.

Close, Day Two: Durham 2nd XI (182 & 129/2; Smith 51*) trail Scotland ‘A’ (528; Budge 151, Munsey 123, Greaves 86; Pringle 4/102, Trevaskis 3/51) by 217 runs

Will Smith finished Day Two unbeaten on 51 as Durham drafted in a number of senior players for match practice against Scotland ‘A’ at Emirates Riverside.

Smith, Chris Rushworth, James Weighell, Barry McCarthy, Stuart Poynter & Graham Clark all featured after the First XI’s fixture against Northamptonshire was washed out.

Clark made 18 while Poynter finished 25 not out after the bowlers got useful overs under their belts ahead of the Specsavers County Championship match against Leicestershire on Friday.

Neil Killeen’s side closed 217 runs behind the visitors after they piled on 528, with Ryan Pringle taking 4/102 off 31 overs.

Former Durham player Dylan Budge scored a scintillating 151 & was well backed-up in a 125-run seventh wicket stand alongside Riyaad Henry.

Close, Day One: Scotland ‘A’ (241/2; Munsey 123, Greaves 76*) lead Durham 2nd XI  (182; Steel 49; Neill 3/14) by 59 runs

A glut of top order wickets & three figures for Scotland international George Munsey put Scotland ‘A’ in control of the three-day friendly at Emirates Riverside.

Adrian Neill struck three times in his first six overs, wiping out the Seconds’ top-order & leaving them 44/4.

Liam Trevaskis & Ryan Davies put on a brief recovery for the fifth wicket before Scott Steel (pictured) scored a run-a-ball 49, the highest score in the innings.

Munsey led the reply, putting on 62 for the first wicket before a stand of 170 with Chris Greaves for the second wicket, who finished unbeaten on 76.

George Harding removed the opener before the close.
