Durham CCC’s Foundation travelled out to Kenya last month to continue delivering a health & social messaging programme, supported by Foundation sponsors Liontrust.
The Club’s social media & digital executive, Luke Bidwell, joined a team of eight other volunteers from charity Cricket Without Boundaries in travelling to Nairobi, Muranga & Kisumu over the course of two weeks.
The team educated over 9,000 children on AIDS prevention & the importance of gender equality, using cricket rules & skills as a core base in which to teach the messages.
Also joining the CWB team was Lucy Mann, who was supported by DCCC Foundation & Liontrust as part of the Let’s Be Women programme currently being delivered in the North East.
The Let’s Be Women project is run across four locations in the region & uses cricket as a tool to empower young women in the local communities to reach their potential.
And the project aims to help leave a lasting legacy in Muranga & Kisumu; Cricket Without Boundaries will continue to work in the regions with future volunteer groups & continue to make a positive impact by using cricket as a medium of delivery for the health & social messages.
“It is fantastic that we are able to continue our support to the Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB) Kenya Project and develop strong pathways from our North East programme,” said Josie Pointon, DCCC’s Foundation Manager.
“It is truly special that we have been able to facilitate both Luke and Lucy’s journey overseas. Lucy, in particular, has come through the ranks in our gender equality cricket programme, in partnership with the Girls Friendly Society and CWB, and she will certainly return as an inspirational role model to the young girls back home.
“The trip has proved to be, once again, a roaring success and I am looking forward to not only seeing the continued development overseas but also the impact our volunteers will have when they return to their delivery and roles back in the UK.
“A huge thank you to Liontrust for their continued support to the programme.”
