Handscomb half century highlight of Northants defeat

Northants Steelbacks 145-6 (Wakeley 47*, Potts 3-31) beat Durham Cricket 124/8 (Handscomb 65*, Keogh 3-30) by 21 runs

Durham Cricket’s quarter-final hopes were dealt a blow as Northants stifled the Ds run chase – despite 65 not out from Peter Handscomb.

The visitors struggled to get any impetus into their run chase after the hosts set a modest target of 145 in their innings.

Some good bowling from the Durham lineup restricted Northants to 67-4 before Alex Wakeley (47*) and Dwaine Pretorius (37) put on 51 run partnership – the latter providing some last over fireworks to add vital runs to the total.

Matty Potts was the standout with the ball taking 3-31 in his four overs.

Durham struggled to get going in response, with wickets falling at regular intervals as Handscomb built an innings at one end.

The spin trio of Josh Cobb (0-12), Graeme White (1-27) and Richard Keogh (3-30) kept things tight in the middle overs leaving the Ds with too much to do in the final stages.
