Durham cricketer Liam Trevaskis hopes his winter in New Zealand will help benefit his all-round game ahead of the 2020 English cricket season.
Trevaskis who is currently playing in Wellington for Upper Hut United Cricket Club is enjoying a superb start to the season and the left-arm slow bowler believes that his time in New Zealand will be hugely beneficial.
Alongside his playing commitments with Upper Hut United – Trevaskis is working with former New Zealand international bowler Jeetan Patel at the Wellington Firebirds.
He said: “I’m having a great time out here, it’s my first time in New Zealand so I’m just trying to take it all in.
“I’ve already done a bit of travelling out here around my cricket so hopefully I have more opportunity to see such a beautiful country.
“I was thinking about going away and it came about that the ECB wanted me to come out to Wellington with Liam Patterson-White [Nottinghamshire] to work with Jeetan Patel alongside the Wellington Firebirds, so it fits together well for me.
“Transitioning from indoor facilities to outdoors can be difficult at the start of season, so playing outdoor will hopefully give me the best opportunity to be ready for the start of the season.
“Working with Jeetan is also going to be invaluable, it’s not just the actual advice on technical aspects, but on the art of bowling spin, with plans and reasons why you might want to do something.
“It will just keep adding to a bank of knowledge you have to construct as a cricketer.”
The 20-year-old who had a successful summer for Durham added: “I’m wanting to do some work around my approach to the crease with my bowling, as well as this I’m wanting to get a lot of overs in from both practice and in a game environment before I return so that I can be very comfortable with my game.
“I also hope to be able to just try and perform when I get back to the UK with my batting, so I am wanting to refine a few things and keep working on my method of scoring runs.”
Trevaskis has been in super form so far this winter, with both the bat and ball scoring 53 from 39 balls and picking up 3/5 against Victoria University of Wellington Cricket Club – along with scoring 84 from 79 balls smashing five fours and four sixes against Petone-Eastbourne Cricket Club.
Liam said: “It’s always a big thing no matter what team you go into to try get a few performances on the board, and that’s even more important when you are the overseas professional.
“I’m obviously happy to put in a few good showings of myself so far and aim to put in more to help win games with bat and ball as the team push for promotion.”
