Seconds suffer defeat in opening Championship game against Hampshire

Day 4

Durham lost their opening game of the 2XI Championship season by 336 runs at the Ageas Bowl.

Resuming on 64/4, Stanley McAlindon was caught behind 5 overs into the final morning falling for 6 to Huntley. Hunter soon had another dismissing Doneathy for 6.

Brydon Carse enjoyed his time in the middle on his return from injury scoring 45, fell just short of half century, hitting 8 fours in the process.

George Drissell added 22 from 52 balls, but once he fell lbw, Hampshire almost had victory in their sights. Salisbury was the last wicket to fall, as the hosts won by 336 runs.

Day 3 Durham 64/4

Durham Seconds face an up hill task going into the final day of their Second Championship match against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl. 

Ben McKinney fell first ball of the third day when he was caught behind for 23, falling to add to his overnight score of 23.  Tom Mackintosh was the next batter to go when Scott Currie picked up his second of the morning, with Mitchell Killeen departing 7 balls later to leave Durham on the brink at 78/7.

Luke Doneathy hit 7 fours top scoring with 31 but was dismissed by Brad Wheal who struck with 5/27 as Durham were bowled out for 126 and trailing Hampshire by 346. Matt Salisbury scored an unbeaten 16 as Scott Currie (2/24) and John Turner (2/37) also struck for the hosts.

Durham were into the Hampshire batting line up straight away as Matt Salisbury and Stanley McAlindon dismissed the Hampshire openers cheaply reducing them to 35/2

McAlindon was on the ball as he pinned Toby Albert for 7 and Middleton for 16 leaving Hampshire 44/4.

Doneathy and Drissell were soon into the attack and both claimed wickets followed by a first for Matt Salisbury trapping Charlie Mumford for 22. John Wright was then caught behind for 1, to give Drissell his second wicket reducing the hosts to 98/8.

Hampshire were eventually bowled out for 145 setting Durham 492 to win with McAlindon (3/31) striking alongside two wickets each from Drissell, Doneathy and Salisbury.

Scott Currie continued where he left off in the first innings, as he pinned Ben McKinney lbw for 4 in the second over. Harry Crawshaw was then bowled for 4 by Turner. Tom Mackintosh and Jonathan Bushnell added 30 for the third wicket before Bushnell fell for 13.

Mackintosh hit 5 fours in 26, but he was adjudged lbw for 26. Brydon Carse (8*) and Stanley McAlindon (5*) saw Durham to the close on 64/4 still requiring a further 428 to win.

Day 3 – Hampshire 472ao, Durham 58/4

Resuming on 390/7, Mitchell Killeen struck 4 overs into day 2 dismissing Mason Crane for 44 as he was caught by Graham Clark. George Drissell claimed his second wicket soon after when John Turner was caught for 15 to leave Hampshire 9 down. 

Brad Wheal was the final Hampshire wicket to fall when he was stumped for 82 as George Drissell wrapped up the innings to claim figures of 3/53 from 20.3 overs while Matt Salisbury (4/75) and Mitchell Killeen (2/71) struck. Hampshire being bowled out for 472 in 117.3 overs.

Rain took the players off the field with Durham 28/0 16 overs into their first innings shortly after lunch with the players off the field for three hours, with play getting back underway at 5pm.

Durham facing a strong Hampshire seam attack which included Scotland seamer Brad Wheal found the going tough in their reply. Harry Crawshaw was the first Durham wicket to fall when he was caught behind for 13, followed by a second wicket for Turner when Clark was caught behind for 4.

Brad Wheal struck in consecutive balls to dismiss Jonathan Bushnell and Brydon Carse however a defiant Ben McKinney scored an unbeaten 25 from 85 balls backed by 9* from Luke Doneathy

Durham closed on 58/4 from 29.1 overs trailing by 414 as bad light stopped play early on day 2.

Day 1 – Hampshire 390/7 

Durham 2XI claimed 7 wickets on the opening day of the 2XI Championship against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl, as Hampshire closed day 1 one 390/7. 

Durham won the toss and elected to bowl and Matt Salisbury was straight into the action as he dismissed Tom Prest for 0 caught behind by Tom Mackintosh, with Fletcha Middleton departing in the fifth over as he was trapped LBW for 8, reducing the hosts to 16/2.

Having picked up two early wicket a mammoth 163 run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Aneurin Donald and Toby Albert saw Hampshire go from 16/2 to 179/3 when Donald fell for 109 from 73 balls to Matt Salisbury caught by Harry Crawshaw, as Hampshire went into lunch on 179/3.

Salisbury struck 4 balls after lunch when he bowled Ross Whiteley for 4, however an 83 run partnership between Albert and Currie took the hosts to 269/5 before Scott Currie was pinned lbw for 43 to give Matt Salisbury his fourth wicket.  Hampshire reaching 278/5 at tea.

Toby Albert brought up his century in 223 balls but was dismissed by George Drissell once reaching 3 figures, with Jonathan Bushnell striking two balls later trapping Charlie Munford lbw for 22, as Hampshire moved onto 315/7.

Mason Crane (37) and Brad Wheal (36) closed the day with a 75 run partnership from 119 balls, with Hampshire ending day 1 on in a strong position on 390/7.

Matt Salisbury was the pick of the Durham bowlers with 4/72, while Killeen, Drissell and Bushnell all claimed one apiece.
