Walking Cricket returns outdoors

Durham Cricket Foundation has resumed its walking cricket programme outdoors with three weekly sessions running across the county.

Following a successful winter for the Foundation’s walking cricket initiative, during which the charity expanded its sessions from two to three hubs, the outdoor sessions are now running at the Seat Unique Riverside as well as at Willington Cricket Club and at Peterlee Cricket Club.

Walking Cricket is a slow-paced and calm variant of the original sport that is ideal for anyone over the age of 50.

The sessions are part of Durham Cricket Foundation’s “50 Not Out” initiative, which aims to improve older people’s mental and physical wellbeing through two strands of the programme – “Active Minds”, offering arts and crafts activities and “Active Bodies”, focusing on a wide range of cricket-themed sessions.

The Foundation has been continuously running walking cricket for a year now, with sessions going indoors last winter.

With the cricket season underway now, the charity has moved all sessions back outdoors and is welcoming new people to join and have a go. Everyone has an equal chance to bat, bowl, and field while walking in this variant of the game. The game’s basic principles remain the same, with the exception that everyone must walk to score runs! There are also mini-games and a lot of warm-up routines before the game starts.

The sessions are free of charge and all equipment is provided.

The following weekly sessions are available:

Peterlee: every Thursday, 10.30am – 11.30am, at The Pavilion, Helford Road, SR8 1ER

Willington: every Friday, 10:00am – 12:00pm at Willington Cricket Club,1 Manor Rd, Willington, Crook DL15 0QX

Chester le Street: every Friday, 1.00pm – 3.00pm, at Seat Unique Riverside, Chester le Street, DH33QR
