The Great North Run returns for its 41st edition on September 11th, 2022, and we have a limited number of spots available to run for the Durham Cricket Foundation!
The event is the world’s biggest and best half marathon, a 13.1-mile run starting in Newcastle and finishing off in South Shields, and is a fantastic opportunity for runners to raise millions of pounds for charity each year.
Last year, six runners participated under the name of Durham Cricket Foundation and raised £2,298, allowing us to better fund the Foundation’s project at the Great North Children’s Hospital, which provides a sports and educational programme to Newcastle Bridges School patients.
In 2022, the Great North Run city-to-sea course is back with its epic South Shields finish line and with ten free spaces available for the Durham Cricket Foundation, the charity is once again looking for runners who would like to run in support of our work with the Great North Children’s Hospital.
The project in the Bridges School delivers one-to-one cricket-themed sessions to long-term patients, with the aim to help children become more active, where possible, while delivering personal outcomes to students.
Durham Cricket Foundation’s work with the Great North Children’s Hospital has been running for two academic years, with the project doubling its delivery and reach in the second year of running.
As a result, this year twice as many children are benefitting from weekly sessions, which provide an outstanding sense of wellbeing and joy to patients with different illnesses and challenges.
A participant who took part in the sessions had said: “Thanks to your competitive, enjoyable and genuine sessions you have not only made me enjoy cricket: a sport I would have never thought of even trying, but helped my recovery massively and I’m very appreciative of that.”
The marathon runners, who decide to take part, will play an important role in ensure that Durham Cricket Foundation can continue to run fun and active sessions at the Bridges School to patients in the new academic year.
Participants may wish to take part in the marathon in two ways: 1) As an individual or 2) Under a Cricket Club. Either of the routes are unique in their own way and allow the participant to contribute differently towards a cause.
