Boys’ under 16s remain unbeaten with 46 run win over rivals Yorkshire in County Cup

Henry Sherwood and Freddie Lower claim three wickets apiece as Durham under 16’s boys defeat group leaders Yorkshire by 46 runs in a low-scoring ECB County Cup encounter at Gateshead Fell Cricket Club.

Durham skipper Luke Symington won the toss and chose to bat first with George Fishwick striking three early boundaries for the hosts. Callum Gaffney was caught behind off Alexander Wade’s bowling in the fifth over, with Durham on 18.

Symington partnered Fishwick for 34 runs before they both fell in quick succession, the former falling to Bradley Sylvester. Fishwick was bowled in the following over by Matthew Firbank leaving Durham 52 for three.

After a 37-run partnership Edward Burch made Robbie Bowman the first of his four victims, having him lbw for 24. Rohan Vagadia and Matthew May fell in back-to-back overs as Durham fell 112 for six.

After a stand of 27, Burch had Joe Twiddy for his third wicket, before taking his fourth in the 36th over to reduce Durham to 142 for eight. James Minto and Brett Hutchinson put on 33 for the ninth wicket before the latter was dismissed by Sylvester for 22.

Sherwood fell cheaply as Durham were all out for 177 with James Minto finishing unbeaten on 25. Burch was the star bowler for the visitors, collecting figures of 4-35.

Sherwood took his first wicket in the third over, having Tom Fraine caught by Fishwick for two. Sherwood had his second dismissal in the seventh, having Zaki Anjam caught behind by Bowman, leaving Yorkshire 22 for two.

Yorkshire only scored 10 runs in the following four overs before Lower struck in his first over, having Archie Phillipson for 13. Lower took his second in the fifteenth, Durham had Yorkshire 59 for four.

Lower had Burch caught and bowled in the nineteenth with the visitors on 68. Charlie Taylor and Joe Thompson took the white rose to 80 before Durham took wickets in three consecutive overs; Gaffney picking up wickets either side of Minto’s dismissal of Thompson.

Alexander Wade and Bradley Sylvester shared the visitors’ largest partnership of 33 before William Hampson bowled the latter. Sherwood assured victory for Durham, prising Wade’s wicket for 28.

Durham sit second in the group with a game in hand over top of the table Yorkshire, having won four of five games with the other fixture abandoned.
