15 in contention for opening home game against Somerset in Metro Bank One Day Cup

Durham will be hoping to put Sunday’s loss to Worcestershire Rapids behind them when they host Somerset in the Metro Bank One Day cup tomorrow at 11am.

Tomorrow’s clash against Somerset in Chester le Street is Durham’s opening fixture on home soil in the year’s 50 over competition and they will be looking to get to back to winning ways.

Ryan Campbell has named a 15 player squad for the Somerset fixture, which sees the return of George Drissell to the fold. Drissell has recovered from an ankle injury and is now back in contention to face Somerset.

Somerset, like Durham have won one and lost one in the competition so far, they chased down 270 to beat Kent by 3 wickets but suffered defeat to Hampshire by 5 wickets on Sunday.

Somerset are one of the teams hit the most by the Hundred with 11 of their regular players missing. Will Smeed, Sonny Baker, Tom Lammonby, Craig Overton, Lewis Gregory, Tom Banton, Tom Abell, Roelof van der Merwe, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Jake Ball and Ben Green are all on Hundred duty.

However, Somerset are known for their strong academy and pathway programme and will have a number of young up and coming talent on show tomorrow. Andy Umeed the Somerset opener is in fine form, leading the run charts after two games with 198 runs.

They have also signed Scottish international fast bowler Charlie Cassell on a short-term contract for the One Day Cup. The 25-year-old made his Scotland debut last month against Oman and broke the record for the most wickets in an ODI for a debutant when he claimed seven for 21.

Words from Ryan Campbell

We were very disappointed with the result against Worcestershire. There were times when we were on top in the game but, in this competition, you are going to have lots of ups and downs.
You are going to play your youngsters and you hope that some come through and Ben McKinney today, and young James Minto, 16 years of age, bowled beautifully at the start. At the end of the day, we are also about winning cricket games and we couldn’t do that.
I thought Libby played outstanding and showed, if you got in, there were plenty of runs to be had. It was a beautiful wicket. With the new ball it nibbled around a bit, but you had to show patience and you had to stay in.
thought young Fateh Singh came in (for Worcestershire) and really ignited Libby as well and we didn’t have the answers. I thought 260 was probably over the odds from once the position we had.

Opposition Corner

Captain: Sean Dickson

Overseas player: Charlie Cassell (Scotland)

2023 finish: Seventh (Group B)

2023 leading run scorer: Andy Umeed (613)

2023 leading wicket taker: Jack Brooks, Ned Leonard, Danny Lamb (8)

Key player: Andy Umeed blossomed as a Somerset player in this competition a year ago to such an extent that he has earned regular selection in the Vitality County Championship this season. He has worked hard on the attacking side of his game and is now high on confidence and capable of flaying opposition attacks.

Keep an eye on: Alfie Ogborne is fresh from signing a new two-year contract at the Cooper Associates County Ground. The 21-year-old left-arm seamer has progressed through Somerset’s age-group teams and club cricket with North Perrott and Bridgwater. He will be keen to justify the faith being shown in him.

Final thought: Losing as many as ten players to The Hundred has hampered Somerset’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup prospects in recent seasons and, with that situation repeated, they will again be relying on a group of young prospects to qualify from the group stage this season.
