Ds Abroad: A busy start to 2025 with Durham players featuring around the globe

With 2025 here the new cricket season is well on its way and many of the Durham squad will spend January and February overseas prepping for the up and coming season.

We take a look at members of the squad who are abroad during the early part of 2025.

Brydon Carse and Mark Wood will be back in England colours as they are both heading to India for their white-ball tour, which includes three ODIs, five IT20s. The white ball tour kicks off on Wednesday 22 January in Kolkata for the opening IT20.

Both Carse and Wood are also named in the England squad for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, hosted by Pakistan and the UAE in February and March.

The women’s Ashes kicks off in January with two of the Durham women’s squad included; Lauren Filer and Bess Heath will spend the next month in Australia for the multi-format series.

Filer is named in all three format squads, with Heath included in the T20 and Test squads only.

David Bedingham is currently representing South Africa for their two-match Test series against Pakistan taking place in Cape Town. South Africa are 1-0 in a two-match series which is set to conclude on Wednesday 9 January.

Following the completion of the Test series, Bedingham will join up Sunrisers Eastern Cape for the third iteration of the SA20, South Africa’s premium franchise tournament.

The Sunrisers are undoubtedly the SA20’s most successful franchise, having won both campaigns so far and will be looking to pick up their third consecutive title in the 2025 campaign.

A short stint home from South Africa, Ben McKinney is back in England colours as he prepares for England Lions series against Australia. The England tour features two four-day matches against a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane on 14 January, followed by a first-class Test against Australia A in Sydney on 22 January.

Trudy Johnson and Grace Thompson will represent Durham at the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup in Malaysia.

Sixteen teams from around the world will take part in the 41-match event across 15 days of competition from 18 January to 2 February 2025, with England set to face Ireland, Pakistan and America with all matches in Johor.

Graham Clark has enjoyed a strong start with Chittagong Kings in the Bangladesh Premier League. In his first game for the side Clark smashed 40 off 25 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes as the Kings posted 219 from 20 overs. In reply Durbar Rajshani were bowled out for 114, with the Kings winning by 105 runs.

Durham skipper Hollie Armitage has returned to Central Hinds for a second summer of the Dream11 Super Smash in New Zealand. The competition kicked off last week with Central Hinds losing their opening two games in tight clashes with Wellington Blaze and Otago Sparks.

Nathan Sowter returns to the United Arab Emirates for the DP World International League T20. Sowter will once again feature for Desert Vipers having been parr of the Vipers squad in 2024.

Ollie Robinson will also be part of the DP World International League T20, having been added as a replacement player for the Gulf Giants. The Gulf Giants, who are coached by Andy Flower, finished second in the group in series two of the Dubai ILT20 and will be looking to go one better this year and top the group, progressing into the knockout stages.

Robinson will go up against Sowter on 14 January at Dubai International Stadium, as the Giants take on the Desert Vipers.
