Matthew Potts

Matthew Potts had a successful 2024, producing career-best numbers with bat and ball for Durham and making several England appearances.

Potts began the 2024 season in excellent batting form and finished it as Durham’s top wicket-taker in the County Championship with 33 wickets in eight matches.

His batting was brilliant at Edgbaston. He scored 44 in the first innings against Warwickshire before his appearance as a nightwatchman provided his maiden professional century and a career-best 149* to guide Durham to safety.

He lifted Danny Briggs straight for six on his way to a 97-ball half-century and advanced smoothly to his maiden ton from 173 balls.

The seamer picked up five wickets in Durham’s win against Worcestershire at Kidderminster before claiming six wickets in games against Essex, Hampshire and Lancashire.

The England bowler’s form improved, snaring six wickets in the away draw to Essex before taking firstinnings figures of 4/29 in the defeat to Worcestershire.

Potts was present in England’s squads for all six Test matches in the 2024 summer, with two appearances against Sri Lanka yielding five wickets before he was released during the Third Test to be made available for Durham.

Returning from international duty, the 26-year-old took career-best figures of 9/68 to help complete victory by an innings and 63 runs over Lancashire in the County Championship.

In a 10-over spell on the final morning, the Durham spearhead collected figures of 5/30 and ended the game when he had Anderson Phillip leg before wicket to complete a match return 12 for 126.

Potts returned to Durham white ball action for the first time since 2021, taking six wickets in seven T20 Blast matches. He had Louis Kimber caught before bowling Oliver Cox and Lewis Goldsworthy to claim figures of 3/20 against Leicestershire.

Potts also impressed in white-ball cricket for England, finishing with eight wickets in England’s ODI series against Australia in September, the joint-highest tally with an average of under 25.

Potts was in England’s squad for their Test tour of Pakistan. In the second Test, he played in an all-Durham seam attack and took three wickets.
