International round-up: Latham smashes sublime ton

A classy century by Tom Latham led New Zealand to a memorable victory over India – but the hosts fought back to win the latest One-Day series 2-1.

Latham was involved in the highest ODI partnership on Indian soil when chasing a score alongside Ross Taylor, guiding the visitors to victory in the first match in Mumbai.

After dropping to 80/3 in pursuit of 281 to win, the pair came together to put India under the cosh. Latham swept proficiently either side of the wicket & eventually got the required rate back below a run-a-ball.

He completed a century, his fourth in ODI cricket, to see it home on 103 not out.

India levelled the series before a thrilling final match went down to the final over after they set New Zealand 338 to win.

Latham added the late impetus to take the Blackcaps close, scoring 65 off 52 balls before being run out, & they ultimately fell six runs short.

Nevertheless, the left-hander finished as the series’ second-highest run-scorer (206) behind Indian superstar Virat Kohli (263).

Irish duo Barry McCarthy & Stuart Poynter have also been in action during the ‘A’ tour of Bangladesh during October.

The sides played one unofficial ‘Test’ before five limited-overs fixtures, one of which was a Twenty20, but it proved a difficult assignment for the winless Irish side.

Poynter featured in the red ball fixture, scoring 23 runs & taking a catch as they fell to a five-wicket defeat in Sylhet.

The first 50-over encounter was in the balance before rain washed it out as a draw, with McCarthy playing a big role. He made 39 to lift Ireland to 229 before taking two quick wickets, finishing with 2/23 off four overs.

But despite showing promise in the first match at Cox’s Bazar, the following four would end in defeat.

McCarthy contributed a further four wickets while Poynter appeared in three of the white ball matches, making a top score of 25 in the second.
