Abi Glen, Sophia Turner & Trudy Johnson sign rookie deals

Durham Cricket are pleased to announce the signings of three rookie players to join up with Danielle Hazell’s side, as the squad comes together for the 2025 season.

Abi Glen, Sophia Turner and Trudy Johnson join Durham Women on rookie contracts ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Glen and Turner have penned two-year contracts, lasting until the end of the 2026 campaign with Johnson joining on an initial one-year deal.

Johnson has been part of Durham’s pathway since under-10 level, making her senior debut for North East Warriors in 2022, having also represented Northern Diamonds, playing for their Academy and Second XI since 2021.

18-year-old, Johnson has made huge strides in 2024 having been named in the England Under 19s squad for their ICC Women’s U19 World Cup 2025 in Malaysia, while she was also part pf the North of England squad at Loughborough University in August.

Johnson was the leading run scorer across North East Warriors Under 18s and Senior Women with 372 runs with a top score of 59 against Scotland, while her 17 wickets saw her finish as second leading wicket taker across North East Warriors Under 18s and Senior Women with a best of 4/28 against Yorkshire at Darlington.

Having risen through the ranks at Yorkshire, Glen made her professional debut for Northern Diamonds in 2022 and has appeared 27 further times.

An all-rounder, the 23-year-old has scored over 500 runs and taken 35 wickets across both white ball formats, shining with a maiden List A half-century and 3/42 in a 10-run victory over Western Storm in April 2024.

Coming from Lancashire’s academy, Turner was part of the Red Rose side that lifted the 2022 T20 County Cup.

After emerging for Lancashire and Thunder, the right-arm seamer turned out for Northern Diamonds and has taken 31 white ball wickets in her career so far.

Johnson said:  I’ve been playing for Durham since I was 10 and to see the development made in the clubs women’s section has been phenomenal. The last 8 years have been a blast and I can’t wait to start the next chapter with this amazing opportunity.

“It’s so exciting to be involved in this new era in women’s cricket and I feel privileged to be a part of Durham’s professional set up. They have a great squad lined up and hopefully we can bring home some silverware this year.”

Glenn added: I’m really excited to be joining Durham with its first professional women’s team. It’s such an amazing opportunity to build something new and for me to develop my cricket further.

“To be signing my first full time contract is a dream come true and I absolutely cannot wait to get started. Being part of the Diamonds for the last two to three years was one of the best things I could’ve asked for, but to be able to continue my cricketing journey with such a brilliant club will be something special. The vision for the club is clear and using that hopefully we can bring some women’s cricket success to the north.

“The team both Marcus and Dani have bought together is such a good blend of talent and experience with both new and old faces. I’m so grateful for the opportunity they have given me and cannot wait to get going very soon!”

Sophia Turner said: After speaking to Dani & Marcus, I knew Durham was the right place to call home. All the plans and values for the team are amazing & I can’t wait to get going We have a very exciting group of players, so I’m looking forward to seeing us all work together next season.”
