Bancroft hails positive progress

Durham captain Cameron Bancroft believes this week’s draw over Lancashire shows the side are going in the right direction.

Bancroft’s innings proved key in Durham securing a well-earned draw, finishing unbeaten on 92 from 191 balls as Durham closed day four on 191/6 from 75 overs at Sedbergh School.

“I think at the start of the innings we were hoping to try and bat as long as we could to maybe give ourselves a chance to win the game, but obviously the pitch began to deteriorate, and it was probably a bit too much for us. It’s a good result for us in the end and a good, hard-fought draw”, said Bancroft.

Bancroft was eight runs away from his century, when the players shook hands at the close as Durham went unbeaten in four.

He added: “For us to draw the game was far more important than for me to get a hundred.

“I had to do my job and it was a nice to do it.

“It’s been a good game of cricket after what was probably a questionable decision to bowl first – when you don’t know what a cricket ground is like you hedge your bets.

“It was a tug of war the whole four days – they had momentum then we had momentum and it was a good solid game of cricket.”

Following Thursday’s draw, the Durham skipper is delighted with the positive signs his side are beginning to show.

“We were pretty disappointed with our start but since then we have won two games, had a wash-out and a draw against a good team here so we are going in the right direction.

“There are still a lot of things to improve but I think it’s a positive that we’re getting good results.”
