Durham bowler Barry McCarthy has earned a first full Ireland call up for two One-Day internationals with Sri Lanka.
The 23-year-old has impressed in the First XI in recent weeks and also caught the eye of national head coach, ex-New Zealand cricket John Bracewell.
He is the only uncapped player included in a 13-man squad, including 2nd XI wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter, for the games in Malahide on 16 & 18 June.
It comes off the back of a second consecutive three-wicket haul in Natwest T20 Blast cricket and a maiden first-class five-for last month.
“It has been a great last couple of weeks and this news has really put the icing on the cake for me,” McCarthy told Cricket Ireland.
“It’s been brilliant to play first-team cricket at Durham and to achieve success too, which has given me great confidence should I get a chance against Sri Lanka.”
Head coach Bracewell said: “Barry has been in tremendous form with Durham and deserves his opportunity. He’s a powerful cricketer who will fit in well with the squad.”
McCarthy was handed his seasonal debut in the Specsavers County Championship match against Lancashire, marking his third first-class appearance with a maiden five-for.
He also registered career-best figures of 3/23 in the Natwest T20 Blast against the same side, following it up with 3/27 against the Notts Outlaws last night.
