Bedingham scoops three awards at Paul Collingwood Medal Player of the Year Dinner

David Bedingham enjoyed his first full season at Durham Cricket scooping three awards at Durham’s Paul Collingwood Medal Player of the Year Dinner last night at the Hilton Hotel Newcastle, hosted by Charles Dagnall. 

Bedingham who joined Durham ahead of the 2020 season settled right in, in Chester le Street having a superb summer in all formats, picking up the Paul Collingwood Medal.

He amassed 1029 runs in the LV=Insurance County Championship which included a career best 257 against Derbyshire in addition to notching three half centuries and three centuries in the County Championship at 60.53. He was also in the runs in both white ball competitions scoring three fifties in the Vitality Blast and four in the Royal London Cup.

Bedingham’s success saw him voted Members Player of the Year while he was also recognised by his team mates as the 2021 Players Player of the Year.

There was no surprise to see Chris Rushworth honoured as the LV=Insurance County Championship player of the year in a season where he broke the clubs’ record as the leading wicket taker in first-class cricket overtaking Graham Onions with 528 wickets. Rushworth finished the summer with 59 wickets in the County Championship and Durham’s leading County Championship wicket taker for the season something he has done each year since 2017.

Matthew Potts won the Vitality Blast Player of the Year having finished with 16 wickets and the clubs leading wicket in this format for the season, Potts also added valuable runs down the order, scoring his T20 career best score at Trent Bridge with an unbeaten 40 against Nottinghamshire.

Durham skipper Scott Borthwick was named the Royal London Cup Player of the Year, following an impressive season with both bat and ball having led Durham to the final of the List A final in 2021. Borthwick scored 260 runs and claimed 10 wickets throughout the competition as Durham topped group 1. He also enjoyed runs and wickets over his former club Surrey in the RL50 semi-final with 71 runs and 2 wickets.

Liam Trevaskis won the 2XI player of the year award in a successful summer for the clubs 2XI team finishing runners up in the Championship and topping the North group in the T20 group. The 22 year old picked up 23 wickets in the 2XI Championship which included 5-69 against Lancashire at Jesmond. He also scored 252 runs with a top score of 77.

The Rising Star award went to 17 year old Tom Mackintosh who performed superbly for Durham Seconds this summer scoring two 100s and two fifties in a season where he scored 428 runs in the 2XI Championship at 47.56.

There was also a number of special achievement awards presented on the night with Chris Rushworth being recognised for becoming the club’s leading wicket taker in first-class cricket with Durham Cricket Board Chairman Bob Jackson being presented with a lifetime achievement award for his services to the club.

In memory of Maureen Jackson, the wife of Durham Cricket Board Chairman Bob Jackson, an award was created in 2019 to celebrate someone within Durham Cricket who has gone above and beyond in the community. The winner of the 2021 award went to Iain Bestford a committed volunteer from Sacriston Cricket Club who has spent many years volunteering across the club. Iain also volunteers with both the North East Premier League and the Durham Cricket Board Junior League.

The Durham Cricket Club Person of the Year Award is an award given to a member of staff who has gone above and beyond to ensure Durham Cricket have achieved success. The 2021 winner of the Club Person of the Year  went to Kim Riddle.
