Durham Second XI fall to defeat at Lady Bay sports ground

Day 3: Nottinghamshire 650 beat Durham 401/7 dec & 189 

Durham Seconds suffered defeat against Nottinghamshire at Lady Bay Sports ground despite day three runs for Jonathan Bushnell and George Drissell .

There were no inroads in the morning session for Durham as Sam King and Jordan Neil added a further 136 runs to their partnership in the morning session, bringing them to 622 for six at lunch.

This period saw King score a double century after 291 deliveries with partner Neil also making three figures, coming from 184 balls.

After lunch, Gidman’s side began to take wickets with King the first to fall for a spectacular 223. He was dismissed in unfortunate fashion as he attempted to reverse sweep Sebastian Hughes-Piñán, instead deflecting into his own stumps.

King’s stand with Neil stand was worth a huge 337 runs and took the hosts to 625. Durham had a second in the over as Fateh Singh fell victim to a ripper from Hughes-Piñán for 2.

Mitchell Killeen picked up Durham’s ninth wicket before Neil was run out for 149 from 247 balls as the hosts were bowled out for 650.

Durham began the second innings trailing by 249. George Drissell and Ben Mckinney shared 38 for the first wicket before captain McKinney was caught at slip.

Drissell (51) cruised to his half century, hitting 11 boundaries to get there in just 36 balls before leaving a Singh delivery on his pad in front of off stump the next ball with Durham on 66.

Ross Whitfield (37) and Jonathan Bushnell (47) then shared a stand worth 60 in just 65 balls before Whitfield chipped one to short leg. Killeen was next Durham batter to fall with the score on 136 as he became Matthew Montgomery’s second victim.

Montgomery then bowled Luke Symington and Stanley McAlindon in consecutive overs as Durham wickets continued to fall.

Fateh Singh took the wickets of Bushnell, Hughes-Piñán, Ollie Gibson and Robbie Bowman as Durham were unable to stop the momentum of the hosts, who recorded victory by an innings and 60 runs.

Day 2: Durham 401/7 dec, Nottinghamshire 486/6

Durham Second XI endure tough day in Nottingham, taking four second day wickets on a batting-friendly surface as Nottinghamshire pile on the runs.

After beginning the day eight for two, the hosts started the second day with a 58-run partnership shared between Matt Montgomery and Benjamin Martindale.

Jonny Bushnell provided Durham’s first breakthrough of the day, having Montgomery caught at slip by George Drissell for 38.

Martindale then had a 102-run stand alongside Dane Schadendorf before Durham struck twice in quick succession before lunch.

First, Sebastian Hughes-Piñán removed Schadendorf on 46 before Drissell picked up Martindale (70) for his second wicket as Ben McKinney took a stunning grab at slip in the following over; the hosts went into lunch 174/5.

After lunch, Sam King and Sam Seecharan combined well for a partnership worth 114 before Oliver Gibson found the top of off stump to dismiss Seecharan for 56.

Jordan Neil joined King in the middle and the pair formed a mammoth stand worth an unbeaten 198. This partnership saw King reach three figures from 169 deliveries before Nottinghamshire went into the lead.

King sped along to reach 158* by the end of the day as he scored 15 fours and two sixes. Neil passed fifty from 94 balls, finishing the day on 66* with eight fours.

At the end of the second day’s play Durham trail by 85 runs with Nottinghamshire still having four wickets in the bank.

Ben McKinney scored a fine 148 as Durham Second XI enjoyed a strong batting day against Nottinghamshire at Lady Bay Sports ground, before the visitors struck with two late wickets.

Durham skipper, McKinney, won the toss and elected to bat – which looked to be the correct decision.

McKinney and George Drissell shared an opening stand of 132, before Drissell was pinned lbw for 45, just 5 runs shy of his half century, hitting 9 fours in the process.

Left-handed McKinney brought up his century pressing on the back foot – coming up from 121 balls which included 12 fours and four sixes.

New batter Ross Whitfield left off where Drissell finished, as him and McKinney starred with a partnership for the second wicket of 160 as McKinney fell two short of 150, falling to Fateh Singh for 148.

Whitfield looked well set for a century, but departed playing a lose shot, outside the off stump, being dismissed for 94.

Mitchell Killeen added 33 and Stanley McAlindon an unbeaten 19 off 62 balls, as Durham declared on 401/7 with 5 overs left in the day.

Durham struck early in reply as George Drissell dismissed Tom Loten for 5 thanks for a good leg-slip catch by Jonathan Bushnell for 5.

Gibson then picked up Durham’s second as Toby Petman was done by an Ollie Gibson ball which popped on and was against caught by Bushnell.
