Burnopfield win Junior Indoor Trophy

Burnopfield Cricket Club won Durham Cricket Board’s Junior Indoor Six-a-Side Trophy after chasing down Chester-le-Street Cricket Club’s total in a tight final on Sunday, 20 January.

Result: Burnopfield CC (117/4) beat Chester-le-Street CC (114/4) by 2 wickets.

Burnopfield kept a good rate in their innings to get the result needed with four balls to spare.

Owen Butler and Mitchell Killeen were clinical with the bat contributing 30 not out and 26 not out to help their team exit the competition as winners after five weeks of indoor cricket.

Chester-le-Street batted with a steady pace to end on 114/4 after their 10 overs, but this was a manageable target for the opposition.

Mitchell Killeen said: “The game didn’t start well for us – we were under a bit of pressure by the batsmen. We were struggling to keep the runs down but we pulled it back well at the end. The lads batted well.”

Commenting on the role of the competition in Burnopfield’s winter training, Killeen said: “It (the competition) helps the lads going into the season, gives them ability to build some confidence.”

The Junior Indoor Six-a-Side Competition is organised annually by Durham Cricket Board in a bid to create more competitive opportunities for junior teams in the off-season.

The competition received the greatest interest this winter than ever before, with 17 teams taking part.
