Following the draw with Northamptonshire last week, Durham are still waiting for their first win of the campaign despite some impressive displays with both bat and ball.
“On a pitch that seemed to flatten out, we ran out of ideas to take wickets and it is disappointing.”
“But for the majority of the last two games we’ve played a lot of good cricket”
Collingwood, who made a second innings half-century, decided to bat on during the final morning and helped to add 61, which gave Somerset a victory target of 337.
“Going into the last day, you get a good gauge when you’re out in the middle of how the pitch is playing, and you knew that once the ball gets soft, there wasn’t too much to frighten you.” said the 37 year old.
“There was a little bit of uneven bounce but it was so slow that you could adjust as a batsman, so I knew it was going to be tough and that’s the reason why we batted on for a little bit”
Collingwood was also wise to be cautious about the Somerset batting line-up, who showed in their innings that they have strength in depth.
“Somerset are a team that bat all the way down to number 11 I think” Collingwood joked after the game.
“They’ve pretty much all got hundreds in the past so they’re a difficult side to bowl out and it proved that today”
Whilst the abandoned day proved to be a decisive factor in the eventual result, Durham’s captain was also left to rue a second innings batting slump as a flurry of quick wickets saw last season’s champions lose 5-36.
“We had a disappointing day ourselves to be honest on day two with the bat”
“I was very disappointed with how we went about things on that afternoon. We were in a great position in the game and Somerset got themselves back into it”
“We’ve got to make sure we’re better than that if we want to beat the best teams and we’ll put that right in the future hopefully” added Collingwood.
“But, only having three days cricket and still trying to push for a win and only getting six wickets away is not a bad effort”
“We keep putting teams under a lot of pressure and hopefully a win is not too far away”
