Coughlin impresses on England under-19 debut

Durham Academy bowler Josh Coughlin made an impressive England under-19 debut against Sri Lanka at Fenner’s last week.

Though the match was eventually drawn, the 18-year-old racked up figures of 2/45 from 21 overs, including no fewer than seven maidens.

Both of the quick bowler’s wickets were caught behind the wicket as he registered the lowest economy rate among England’s attack.

First to go was Avishka Fernando, caught at second slip to break a 42-run partnership, before wicketkeeper Navindu Vithanage was caught one-handed by counterpart Ollie Pope to hand Coughlin a second.

England were able to force the follow-on but a number of rain delays left them unable to force victory.

The second Test starts tomorrow at Northampton but Coughlin is ruled out with a knee sprain.

Head coach Andy Hurry said: “It’s disappointing for Josh to miss out with an injury sustained in the field on the last day.

“He performed exceptionally well as part of our bowling unit in the first Test, but he’ll be staying with us in Northampton.”
