Durham Seconds draw with Kent after play abandoned due to wet outfield

Following the decision to abandon play after lunch on day 3 due to a wet outfield, no play was possible on day 4 at Richmondshire with the game being abandoned shortly before the start of the final day and the match finishing as a draw. 

Day 3: Durham 2XI 384ao, Kent 388/7

A wet outfield meant play was abandoned on day 3 at 2:50pm with Kent leading Durham by 4 runs.

Kent resumed on 314 and Durham were straight into the Kent batters when Seb Allison got rid of set batter Marcus O’Riordan for 169 caught behind, in the first over of the morning.

Ollie Gibson struck in back-to-back overs first to get Harry Turner caught behind for 41 and then trapping George Ealham lbw for 12, reducing the visitors to 339/7.

Ali and Logan took Kent to 388/7 as they passed Durham’s 384 on the stroke of lunch, however play was abandoned at lunch due to a wet outfield, with play to resume on Thursday at 11am.

Day 2: Durham 2XI 384ao, Kent 2XI 314/4

Marcus O’Riordan posted an unbeaten 169 for Kent 2XI as they closed day 2 in Richmond 314/4 trailing Durham 2XI by 70 runs.Having been 335/8 at close of play on day 1, Durham seconds added a further 49 runs for the final two wickets this morning, finishing their innings 384ao.Chris Rushworth got Durham off to a flyer picking up two wickets in the first over of the Kent reply. McGregor would fall first, pinned by Rushworth, departing for 0 after 2 balls. With the fourth delivery of the innings, Durham’s leading First-class wicket taker picked up his second, as a full delivery popped up on Muyeye before the ball looped comfortably into the hands of Jonathan Bushnell.Mead and O’Riordan led the Kent recovery putting on an important partnership of 104 before the Kent opener Mead was dismissed LBW for 45 from the bowling of Stanley McAlindon.O’Riordan, alongside Nightingale who posted a half-century, built another partnership of 106 before the Kent number 5 retired not out on 51 from 75 deliveries.Basra added a quick 13 runs from 8 deliveries, before he was trapped in his crease LBW to George Drissell.The final partnership of the day was an unbeaten one of 87, as O’Riordan (169*) & Turner (30*) closed a strong day 2 for Kent’s 2XI.

Day 1 Durham 335/8 (D.Bedingham 121, T.Mackintosh 71, J. Bushnell 51; M Luckett 4/52, M Edwards 3/89)

David Bedingham stepped up his recovery with 121 runs on day 1 of Durham’s 2XI Championship fixture against Kent. 

Having won the toss Durham elected to bat at Richmondshire, but rain meant play was delayed for over an hour.

Once underway, Durham lost two quick wickets with both openers falling cheaply. Jamie Crawley (5) and Ben McKinney (6) fell as the home side were reduced to 20/2.

Bedingham who has missed Durham’s recent T20 games with a shoulder injury he sustained against Worcestershire in the LV=Insurance County Championship made his return to competitive action.

Him and Jonathan Bushnell rebuilt to take Durham to 133/2 at lunch time from 31 overs, Bedingham racing to 50 shortly before lunch from 47 balls with 12 fours, as he went into the break unbeaten on 72 and Bushnell unbeaten on 43.

The 28-year-old continued where he left off after lunch scoring his century in 87 balls with 20 fours and 1 six as he took Durham past 200 from 39 overs.

Jonathan Bushnell fell after reaching 50 as he tried to pull the ball which went straight up to Max Luckett as Mikey Edwards bagged his second wicket of the day. Bedingham departed two overs later for a superb 121 from 98 balls as he feathered one behind to Luckett.

Tom Mackintosh scored a well made 71 from 149 balls with 11 fours backed by 39 from Ross Whitfield as Durham closed day 1 on 335/8. Luckett (4/52) and Edwards (3/89) the pick of the bowlers for Kent.
