Durham Boys’ Under 16’s stay top of County Cup group with narrow victory over Yorkshire

Durham Under 16’s boys enjoyed a narrow two run victory over Yorkshire to stay top of the ECB County Cup group with runs for Luke Symington and three wickets for Finlay Barlow.

Durham won the toss at Kirbys Solicitors County Ground and chose to bat; Faizan Ghumman and Robbie Bowman shared 44 runs for the opening wicket before Joe White took two wickets in an over for the White Rose.

Ghumman went on to make 32, he fell to Daniel Longley with Durham on 87. Captain Luke Symington then put on 66 for the fourth wicket alongside Will Alexander.

Symington top scored with 65 from 86 deliveries for the young Ds, featuring nine boundaries. His innings ended with Durham on 153 and Yorkshire soon struck again to leave Durham 158 for five.

Will Alexander made 28 alongside Hedley Windows to bring Durham up to 200. Monty Jackson claimed three Durham wickets at the back end of the innings for Yorkshire but could not prevent Windows making an unbeaten 40 to take Durham to 248 for eight.

Barlow broke up the hosts’ opening stand on 46, taking his first of three. He then claimed his second after a partnership worth 32 before Jim Twiddy struck the following over.

After 42 runs were scored for the fourth wicket Durham struck a quickfire double again as Charlie Burdon had Max Chaplin caught for 78 before Windows completed the run out of Aaron Ratnalingam.

Teddy Minto took Durham’s sixth and Barlow snared his third to have Yorkshire seven down. Alexander bowled White for 47 from just 30 as Yorkshire pushed for victory, leaving them 207 for eight with eight overs remaining.

Ghumman contributed with two crucial run outs to deny a Yorkshire victory with Durham grasping victory by just two runs with one over to spare.
