Durham under 18’s suffered a four wicket defeat to Derbyshire in the last 16 of the Under 18’s County Cup despite an unbeaten 46 for Kenzie Peakman.
Having won the toss at Seat Unique Riverside, Durham captain Charlie Scorer elected to bat first.
Despite this Durham lost both openers cheap early on, finding themselves 13 for two after five overs. William Hampson was the next one to depart, bringing Callum Gaffney and Max Jackson to the crease.
Gaffney and Jackson had the first partnership of note as they shared 33 for the fourth wicket before the former was ran out for 22 with the score on 54.
Jackson and Joe Twiddy then put on 50 together for the fifth wicket before Joe Hawkins picked up wickets in back-to-back overs. Jackson was stumped for 32 before Twiddy was bowled for 27.
Kenzie Peakman struck four sixes and one four on his way to making an unbeaten 46 from 47 deliveries, sharing partnerships with Max Martin and Scorer helping John Windows’ side reach 174.
Harris Ajaz (3-38) finished off the Durham innings, taking the final three wickets. Hawkins also took three wickets (3-34) with A Karim claiming two and Matty Stewart taking one.
Derbyshire got off to a flying start before Durham took wickets in three consecutive overs. Jackson broke the opening stand on 34 in the fifth over, having Harrison Parker caught for 24; Mason Bell took Durham’s second, William Tarrant falling for 18.
Jackson then took his second wicket of the innings; Derbyshire 48 for three in just the seventh over. Gaffney was next to strike for Durham; he trapped Hawkins in front in the thirteenth over to leave Derbyshire 72 for four, needing a further 103 to win.
Derbyshire almost halved the deficit with a fifth wicket partnership worth 46 before Gaffney had his second victim, as he trapped Zak Kelly in front.
Charlie Scorer removed Osian Catlin’s off stump with Derbyshire 22 runs away from their target with Muhammed Naeem a mainstay of the innings.
He made 61 not out, featuring six fours and a maximum to take the visitors to a four wicket victory.
