Refugees living in the North East got the chance to see some white ball action up close, when they attended England Women’s ODI against New Zealand and Durham’s T20 Blast game against Worcestershire Rapids.
Durham Cricket working in partnership with Handcrafted Project a North East charity invited a number of refugees to watch England’s opening Metro Bank One Day international and enjoyed events for Durham’s Asian Celebration match against the Rapids.
Having played cricket back in their home country, and still remain huge fans of the sport, Handcrafted Project brings young asylum seekers and refugees together, providing opportunities for them in the region.
As part of their trips to Seat Unique Riverside, the refugees used Durham’s multi-faith room and connected with the club’s Foundation.
Ian Roberts, Handcrafted Project support worker said: “Many of our UASCs are cricket-obsessed. They have grown up playing the sport in their home countries and are desperate to continue playing here.
“We have been grateful that Durham Cricket have given many of our guys their first opportunity to watch a cricket match in person.
“The staff at Durham Cricket made the ground inclusive and welcoming, particularly those running the family zone. The introduction of the multifaith space means that Muslims that we can support can pray whenever they need to. The guys who joined had an excellent time watching England women convincingly beat New Zealand and are excited to return on the 5th July for the T20 blast.
“As a charity we are excited to work more with Durham Cricket. All the guys we support have had terrible experiences already at a young age. Playing and watching cricket gives them a chance to reconnect with happier childhood memories.”
Cameron Rochow, Durham Cricket Community Officer, said: “It was great to welcome a group of refugees to our Women’s ODI against New Zealand, we provided the group with 15 tickets, giving them the chance to watch international cricket right on their doorstep.
This is the start of a relationship with Handcrafted Projects.
“It was then a delight to welcome them back for our Asian celebration event against Worcestershire Rapids. We look forward to continuing the partnership moving forward.”
