Durham Seconds earned a hard-fought draw against Nottinghamshire in the Second XI Championship in a three-day thriller that went all the way to the wire and could have resulted in all three outcomes.
Following Notts’ declaration on 428/7 (Potts 5-88) the visitors set Durham a target of 343 to win and despite Cameron Steel being dismissed for 6, Michael Jones (71) and Graham Clark (40) got the hosts off to a strong start.
The pair were eventually removed by Jordan Cook, which prompted an impressive stand from Solomon Bell (65) and Stuart Poynter, (62) but when both were dismissed by Liam Patterson-White, Durham opted to play for the draw with just two wickets remaining.
Matthew Potts’ and Josh Coughlin’s industrious efforts with the bat saw Durham earn a draw and finish on 287/8 at stumps.
Day Two
Close, Day Two: Durham 2nd XI (306; C Steel 56; Bushnell 71; Potts 55*) trail Nottinghamshire 2nd XI (221; Budinger 58; Coughlin 3/54 & 281/2; Patterson White 88* & Todd 83*) by 196 runs.
John Bushnell (71) and Matthew Potts (55*) compiled a hundred partnership for the ninth wicket to ensure Durham would end their first innings on 306, however the visitors responded well and an excellent stand from Liam Patterson-White and Mitchell Todd has given them a slight advantage going into Day Three.
Opening batsman, Cameron Steel scored a disciplined half-century, which included eight boundaries before being removed by Mark Footitt for 56.
Durham’s top order batsman struggled to match Steel’s innings with Graham Clark (15), Stuart Poynter (28) and James Weighell (24) falling to Patterson-White and Lyndon James.
Bushnell then scored an excellent 71, which included 13 fours alongside Potts (55*) who produced an excellent partnership for the ninth wicket and ensured Durham ended their innings with a slight advantage.

Three wickets for Josh Coughlin & an overnight unbeaten 31 from Cameron Steel helped Durham’s Second XI slightly edge the first day of the Second XI Championship match against Notts at Richmondshire CC.
Coughlin took 3/54 as Notts were bowled out for 221 inside 71 overs, with all five bowlers picking up wickets.
Durham lost three wickets in the reply, though Steel’s 103-ball knock means they have a slight advantage heading into the second day.
Coughlin struck with his first ball of the match, with regular wickets following throughout the innings.
Oliver Gibson picked up two, as did James Weighell & George Harding, with Matthew Potts adding another.
Michael Jones (18), Graham Clark (15) & Tom Jagot (o) were the wickets to fall in Durham’s reply, with Steel & Sol Bell (8*) not out at the close.
