Durham prepare for RL50 opener

Durham head coach Jon Lewis has named a 13-man squad for tomorrow’s Royal London One-Day Cup opener against Yorkshire Vikings under the floodlights at Emirates Riverside (2pm start).

Tom Latham is preparing to lead the 50-over side for the first time after returning for a second spell at the Club over the weekend.

The New Zealand international will not take on wicketkeeping duties during his time at Emirates Riverside, with Stuart Poynter keeping the gloves.

Matthew Potts returns to the squad & could make his List A debut after overcoming a recent back injury in the Second XI. The 19-year-old has been in impressive form the Seconds over the last week, including a maiden century against Warwickshire on Monday.

The game comes too soon for Chris Rushworth, who is making good progress in his recovery from a groin injury picked up in the Specsavers County Championship match against Leicestershire, while Mark Wood is unavailable after joining up with the England Test squad.

Left-arm spinner George Harding, who made his List A debut in the defeat at Emerald Headingley last year, is also included in the squad.

Squad vs Yorkshire Vikings (18 May)

Last Time Out

Yorkshire Vikings (339/4; Bairstow 174; Weighell 3/60) beat Durham (335/5; Cook 106, Richardson 100*) by six wickets

Despite centuries from overseas opener Stephen Cook & Michael Richardson, an incredible display of hitting from Jonny Bairstow handed Yorkshire Vikings a six-wicket win at Emerald Headingley.

Batting first, Cook & Keaton Jennings scored 124 in 20 overs for the opening wicket before Richardson joined the former in a second stand of 124 which saw Cook reach three figures.

Durham managed to keep a steady rate of over six per over through to the end, when Richardson scored his maiden List A century off the final ball of the innings.

Bairstow retorted with a sensational, 113-ball knock to get Yorkshire well ahead of the rate from which the lower order cantered home with 14 balls remaining.

England’s Joe Root also added 55 & Australia international Peter Handscomb made 47 not out to hand Yorkshire the two points.
