Durham were all out for 416 at Liverpool on day four having established a lead of 154 over Lancashire. A century for Paul Collingwood, his first this season, and a fifty for Scott Borthwick helped the visitors claim four batting points on the final day, taking their haul in the match to 10.
For the first time in the game the match started on time but in the spin friendly conditions Simon Kerrigan managed to claim two wickets in the first half hour, with Michael Richardson (41) caught by Tom Smith and his replacement at the crease, Phil Mustard (5), caught by Ashwell Prince.
Scott Borthwick, whose fifty came off 108 deliveries and included eight boundaries, partnered Collingwood, who was dropped on 75, as they steered the Durham total past the 350 mark. Gary Keedy claimed his third wicket when Borthwick was caught by Chapple on 60.
A partnership of 30 with Callum Thorp saw Collingwood, whose century came off 178 balls and included nine fours, reach 114 before he was bowled by Steven Croft . Thorp fell to the same fate six overs later, having hit two huge sixes, when he was dismissed for 25 with Durham 408-9.
A third catch of the innings saw Chris Rushworth out to Croft for 7 with Durham posting a first innings total of 416.
With the final wicket came tea and rain which prevented any further play.
At the close Paul Collingwood said, “It’s nice to get a big score, it’s been a while. Scott Borthwick showed a lot of skill and a lot of patience. His footwork, how quick he was on his feet and his scoring options were brilliant. Once you get into a rhythm on those kinds of wickets you can make them look pretty flat.
“I thought Graham’s bowled the best he has for is, I know that’s difficult to say when he took nine-fer in the last game but on a wicket like that he was excellent. He was always at the batsmen causing problems, nipping the ball both ways and I thought he was fantastic. He has been all season, but on that wicket, which was a batting paradise, he was excellent.
“The bowlers have actually shared the wickets around so as a quartet the bowlers are understanding their roles really well and we seem to be putting a lot of pressure on the opposition. To keep them under three an over was a fantastic effort.
“Keaton Jennings was very skilful. He certainly plays to his strengths and keeps things simple. He’ll have learnt a lot playing against the spinners on that wicket and I thought he looked very composed.
“It’s great for a couple of young guys, him and Michael Richardson, to come in and actually put on some good scores and get some partnerships on. That certainly bodes well for the future.”
