His replacement was run out by Mark Stoneman for three shortly after, bringing Michael Bates to the middle.
McKenzie will be disappointed to have been caught behind off Chris Rushworth ten short of his hundred with Hampshire 143-5.
Michael Bates and Dimitri Mascarenhas ploughed on until tea, adding 40.
Mascarenhas went on to score fifty, from 64 balls, before being caught behind off Claydon without adding any more runs to his score.
The new ball was taken but with 30 overs still remaining play was brought to a halt by bad light. After several inspections by the umpires, play was abandoned for the day at 6.16pm and Hampshire will resume tomorrow on 230-6.
At the close of play Durham CCC spoke to Chris Rushworth, “It’s been a pretty frustrating few days but I think we’ve done pretty well in the time we’ve had out there. It was better batting conditions than it was on Wednesday, the lads stuck at it today and got some rewards in the end.
“It took a while for me to get going but once I got into my rhythm it felt good and obviously getting the wicket of Neil McKenzie gave me a bit more confidence.
“When you lose a day’s play it’s always difficult to force a result but we need to try and get as many points as we can from it, whether that’s setting up a game if they’re up for it, or going for the bonus points.”
