Dynamos beat Royals by 81 runs (D/L)

After showers all afternoon play started on time but just 2.2 overs were possible before the rain resumed. Play was delayed for an hour and Durham resumed on 9-0 with play reduced to 35 overs per side.

The Dynamos lost Phil Mustard for 6 when he was caught by Hamza Riazuddin at mid wicket off David Griffiths in the third over.

A 142 run partnership from 118 balls saw both Michael Di Venuto and Paul Collingwood score well timed fifties, off 54 and 44 balls respectively, having played the batting powerplay to their best advantage with the Dynamos reaching 137 by the 21st over.

The visitors lost three wickets for 13 runs as batting conditions started to become more difficult with Michael Di Venuto caught by Michael Carberry at mid wicket off Chris Wood for 70 in the 24th over with the Dynamos 154-2.

The Dynamos lost their third wicket two overs later when Ian Blackwell was caught on the boundary by James Vince off a Wood delivery for just 6. Durham’s top scorer in the innings, Collingwood, was caught by Liam Dawson off Ervine for 73 the following over.

A diving catch at long off by Dawson off by David Griffiths  saw Dale Benkenstein dismissed for  2 with the Dynamos 173-5.

Rain stopped proceedings for a second time in the Durham innings with the total at 179-5 with 5 overs of the innings remaining. A further over was lost due to the break but the Dynamos went on to take advantage of some loose bowling from Hampshire to extend their score to 210-5 thanks to some intelligent hitting from Gareth Breese (26*) and Gordon Muchall (11*).

A brilliant throw from Liam Plunkett at third man in the fifth over saw Vince run out for 13 with the Hampshire total at 24-1.

The hosts lost three wickets in quick succession two to Gareth Breese in successive overs, who finished his seven over spell with figures of 3-19, and then one to Scott Borthwick, with his fourth delivery.

Breese claimed a third wicket with Hampshire slumping to 60-5 after Collingwood caught Benny Howell  at mid wicket for just 3.

Carberry added 22 to the score before he was trapped lbw by Borthwick with the home side requiring  118 runs off 54 deliveries.  Riazuddin was dismissed next ball when he was bowled by Blackwell for 22.

A cracking dive from Mustard sees Cork caught off Claydon for 10 and the seamer went on to catch Wood in the deep for 14, handing Blackwell his second wicket of the innings and reducing Hampshire to 123-9.

Mitchell Claydon claimed the final Hampshire wicket to secure the Dynamos 81 run victory (D/L Method).

At the close of play Durhamccc.co.uk spoke to Man of the Match, Paul Collingwood, who commented, “It was a good performance, a real good solid performance. We turned up at the ground, saw the pitch and we knew spin was going to play a huge part. It was a good toss to win I thought and we felt that a score of over 200 on that wicket was going to be enough.

“Myself and Di Venuto put on a decent partnership in the middle, that was crucial and the spinners did the job for us, it was fantastic.  It was a tricky pitch and you had to get in on it, once you got in you had to make it count.  It would have been nice to go on and bat those last 8 overs.

“We’re contending in all three forms of the game and got ourselves in a nice position and we just want to continue that. We’ve got 30 days of cricket left this season and every single day is very important for us and we need to make them count.”
