Dynamos Blast their way to Victory

Durham have blasted their way to their second Friends Life t20 win defeating Yorkshire by 76 runs in the local derby.

The Dynamos entertained a huge crowd at Emirates Durham ICG led by a superb display of t20 batting by Phil Mustard who blasted 91 from just 51 balls to lead his side to victory.

The hottest day of the year greeted players and a 7,156 strong crowd at Emirates Durham ICG for Derby Day as the Dynamos took on the Yorkshire Vikings for the second time this t20 season.

The visitors won the toss and sent the Dynamos in with Phil Mustard and Mark Stoneman in first for the Durham side who were looking for their second win, with their only win coming against Yorkshire at Scarborough a fortnight ago.

The Dynamos got off to a flyer with Phil Mustard looking dangerous from the get go.  His presence was felt at the crease in the 4th over where he smacked 27 with two sixes and three boundaries entertaining the big crowd which had gathered at Emirates Durham.

After putting on 62 for the opening partnership, Captain Mark Stoneman was the first to depart when he found Sayers  at short fine leg to depart for 13 with Pyrah with the wicket.

Mustard carried on with his superb shot making, bringing up his 50 in just the 8th over with his half century coming off just 26 balls including 8 fours and 2 sixes.

Mustard and Borthwick continued to add runs on the board for Durham with some superb striking regularly finding the boundary and hitting into the crowd.

The pair compiled an 83 run partnership before Mustard was dismissed in the nervous nineties for 91 after being bowled by Brooks. He came off the ground to a huge applause after the 91 came off just 51 balls and included 11 fours and 3 sixes.

It was just an over later when his partner Scott Borthwick also found his way back to the dugout after making an entertaining 35 from 17 before Sidebottom took a good catch and Pyrah claimed his second wicket.

England T20 squad member Ben Stokes then came in and made a quickfire 23 off just 11 balls before he again tried to hit Sidebottom in the air but he found the hands of Sayers leaving Durham 171-4 with just under 4 overs to play.

Gordon Muchall added a further 27 runs off 24 balls and Gareth Breese 12 off 6 balls to get Durham past 200 and finish on a huge total of 215-6 off their twenty overs with Muchall and Pringle the not out batsmen.

Chris Rushworth got the Dynamos off to a perfect start when he claimed the wicket of Jaques in the second over as Borthwick took a good catch.

Ben Stokes then had immediate effect when he came into the attack, clean bowling Sayers for 1 and Rushworth picked up his 2nd in the 4th over as he dismissed Hodgson who chipped to Gareth Breese leaving Yorkshire 17-3 after four.

The following overs saw some good tight bowling from the Durham attack to restrict the scoring opportunities for Yorkshire.

The Dynamos were in control with all the scoreboard pressure and when Breese struck in the 9th over, bowling Hodd for 11, Yorkshire were 51-4 chasing 216.

Gary Ballance was providing the resistance for the visitors as he found the boundary on several occasions for Yorkshire and showed his big hitting prowess to bring up his half century in the 12th over off just 30 balls.

The run rate was too much for the visitors however and when Breese got his second wicket and the wicket of Ballance, after making 68 from 38, Yorkshire were 102-5 with 7 overs to go.

Young spinner Ryan Pringle then came into the attack and had immediate effect striking on his first ball with Rashid stumped by Phil Mustard for 11, Yorkshire 110-6.

Will Smith then took two wickets with the Yorkshire batsmen picking out the Durham fielders, Pyrah caught for 1 by Mark Stoneman and then Plunkett caught by Scott Borthwick with Yorkshire 131-8 with two overs to go.

The visitors batted out their overs but fell 76 runs short to give Durham a comprehensive victory as they now look to their match against Lancashire at Old Trafford on Sunday to keep their Finals Day chances alive.
