Dynamos Dynamic Batting Sets Up Win

Durham have defeated Derbyshire by 43 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis system after persistent drizzle prevented a result and the Durham batsmen showed their class earlier in the day.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to have a bowl on an overcast and breezy Bank Holiday Monday at Emirates Durham ICG.

The visitors got off to a good start when they claimed the wicket of opener Mark Stoneman in the second over after the Durham skipper lobbed one out to Godleman who took a straight forward catch.

Big hitting opener Phil Mustard looked in good touch until he too found himself back in the pavilion after swinging and missing, clean bowled for 15 by Turner leaving Durham 40-2.

It was then Scott Borthwick and Paul Collingwood who needed to get the run rate ticking over and the pair did just this putting together a 56-run stand.

They regularly found the boundaries before Borthwick gloved one onto his pads which went up into the air into the hands of the Derbyshire keeper to depart for a well-earned 43.

His wicket brought Ben Stokes to the crease who wasted no time in getting his tally going with the all-rounder and Collingwood generating some momentum and adding to the total with ease.

Collingwood brought up his 50 off 59 balls and the pair put on a sensational 73-run stand before Stokes was dismissed for 40 (off 40 balls) trying to go long.

Muchall then came to the crease and put on 52 runs with Collingwood with the pair entertaining the home crowd with boundary after boundary until Collingwood was trapped lbw on 79 from 83 balls.

Muchall continued to add to the tally with Gareth Breese in the final stages of the Durham innings with the pair continuing the trend of solid partnerships putting on 43 runs before Breese was run out in the last over after a neat cameo of 16.

Will Smith (8*) batted out the innings with Muchall who finished his T20 inspired innings on 57 from 40 balls with his innings including 7 fours and 2 sixes to see Durham 273-6.

During the interval a brief shower passed the ground with one over lost and revised target of 270 off 39 overs for Derbyshire.

Graham Onions got Durham off to the perfect start with the ball, taking the wicket of Hughes on just the 5th ball, trapping him lbw with the umpire very quick in raising his finger.

Onions then struck again in the 9th over to dismiss Chanderpaul who edged to Phil Mustard behind the stumps.

Derbyshire’s Paul Borrington and Captain Wayne Madsen then added 30 runs before Onions took a 3rd wicket with Borrington mistiming a pull shot to find Scott Borthwick at mid-wicket who took a good catch to leave the visitors 69-3 in the 15th over.

Players then left the field shortly after as a light shower passed over the ground. It then turned into persistent drizzle for the next hour with play officially called off just after 7pm with Derbyshire 70-3, 43 runs behind the required total on the Duckworth/Lewis system.

The win gives the Dynamos much needed points and great momentum heading into next Sunday’s clash with Lancashire at Emirates Durham ICG.
