Eventful First Day

After winning the toss Durham elected to bat but it was the Sussex bowlers who took advantage of the conditions and had Durham out on the field by 3 o’clock on the first day.

Keaton Jennings was the first man to go in the 10th over, making 11 before he found Matt Prior in the slips giving Jordan the first wicket.  Fellow opener Mark Stoneman was dismissed six overs later, not before he notched up 1000 Championship runs for the season however, making 20 before he edged Anyone behind, Durham 38-2.

Borthwick and Smith then combined and added 43 before Borthwick found Joyce, giving Jordan his second with Borthwick also making enough runs to join Stoneman and make 1000 Championship runs for the 2013 season before he made his way back to the pavilion.

Ben Stokes (7) and Will Smith (32) were Jordan’s next victims as the wickets continued to tumble and the Champions were struggling to stay in the middle.

James Anyon then got in on the wickets as he took three of the next four.  Mustard hit to Jordan for 5 whilst Usman Arshad was bowled by the paceman and Durham were 8 wickets down.

Just 21 more runs were added for the last two wickets as Magoffin claimed his first after Onions made a handy 13 before Anyon took his 5th as Durham Captain Collingwood found Ashar Zaidi for 25, Durham all out for 164 after just 51.2 overs.

The Sussex reply started well for Durham as man on a mission Graham Onions took two early wickets, trapping Nash and Yardy lbw to have Sussex 2-6 in the third over.

Ed Joyce then moved the scoreboard along for Sussex making his way to 45 before Usman Arshad claimed the third wicket, Sussex 64-3.

Arshad then claimed his second of the day when he took the big wicket of Prior who edged behind into Mustard’s hands for 16.

Newly named Ashes squad member Ben Stokes then took Durham’s 5th as he sent Wells back to the pavillion who was dismissed also finding Mustard.

It was thenn Sussex’s afternoon as the home-side took ascendency through the returning Luke Wright. The England limited overs specialist was still in t20 mode as he found all corners of the Hove ground to finish the day on 74no from 60 balls.  Wright combined with Brown (18no) to put on 96 and have Sussex leading by 22 runs at the end of Day 1.
