Gateshead Fell claimed the last spot in the Finals of the Durham Cricket Board Under-14 Indoor 6-a-Side Competition after finishing on top of Group Two, with Leighton Meek leading the way.
In the last matches of the group, where Gateshead Fell competed alongside Newton Aycliffe, Whitburn and Langley Park, the Fell’s juniors dominated in both of their games.
In the first game, Whitburn against Gateshead Fell, Whitburn won the toss and elected to bat. Great bowling from Sam Goodliffe and Month Dixon restricted Whitburn to 24 in 5 overs but a recovery from George Fairbairn (26 not out) and Dan Brown (27 not out) saw Whitburn finish on 93-3.
In reply, Leighton Meek, unbeaten on 29, Sam Goodliffe (22) and Angus Stuart (16) saw Gateshead Fell win off the last ball of the game.
In their second game Gateshead Fell were up against Langley Park. Gateshead won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Langley Park bagged 100-3 in the ten overs, with Dylan Forste, 36 not out, and Patrick Nicholson, unbeaten on 26, the main scorers.
The score was chased down in the ninth over with Leighton Meek retiring on 26 off eight balls to later return to the crease to finish on 39 not out.
In the last game, Newton Aycliffe won the toss and asked Whitburn to bat first. James Robinson scored 21 in an opening stand of 63, with Alex Dickens (21), the other main run scorer in a total of 81-2.
In return, Newton Aycliffe scored at a steady rate with Matthew Greaves retiring on 25 and Harry Wright claiming 21. Newton Aycliffe got the runs required on the last ball of the game for the loss of two wickets.
