Glamorgan Too Good for Second XI

The Durham Second XI have been defeated by Glamorgan in Newport today by 5 wickets.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat the team struggled to stay at the crease as the Glamorgan attack tore through the Durham line-up.

After Jennings and Singh were removed early the trend continued with an unsettled Durham slumping to 20-4 before Glamorgan bowler Simon Jones got a further 3 wickets in the one over to leave the visitors in real trouble.

At 34-7 Durham needed a partnership but couldn’t put together a solid one until the last two in, Mitch Claydon and Ruel Brathwaite put on a 9th wicket stand of 54 to get Durham to 88.  The scorecard showed that eight of the Durham batsman fell to straight balls, either dismissed lbw or clean bowled.

In a tough ask for the Durham bowlers, they started positively and had Glamorgan 30-3 after Harrison took 2 early wickets and Claydon the other. Claydon picked up his second to have the home side 60-4 and Brathwaite chipped in with another to have them 77-5 but Glamorgan found the 12 runs required to record a 5 wicket win.

A dissapointed Coach Jon Lewis said after the game:

“It was a tricky pitch that was hard to score on but in no way explains 34-8. The 9th wicket partnership suggested fewer demons in the pitch or the Glamorgan attack.

“Defending a small total was made more difficult by giving up 26 more extras.  The nine no-balls (18 runs plus the runs off free hits) was particularly wasteful.

“We also took two wickets off two no balls which didn’t help”.

The team will now stay on in Wales to play a 3-day match starting tomorrow May 28th, stay tuned to Twitter for updates.
